Anna Nicol

Anna obtained her undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of British Columbia and is currently completing a master’s degree in counselling psychology. In university Anna worked in health psychology and clinical psychology research labs, where she studied suicidality, non-suicidal self-injury, dissociation, and health behaviours in couples who had experienced a stroke. She previously volunteered as an emergency phone responder at the Vancouver Crisis Centre and has worked as a Neurofeedback technician. Additionally, she has taught trauma-informed yoga which inspired her passion for somatic practice in counselling and using the body as a resource to process trauma, stress, and deep emotions. She aspires to complete training in EMDR and Somatic Experiencing upon completion of her master’s degree.

What led you to counselling?

My pursuit of a career in counselling psychology stems from personal experiences with trauma and grief. Through my own healing journey, I developed a passion for counselling, neuroscience, and body-based healing (yoga, meditation, breathwork). I realized the power that all humans possess to transform themselves and to reclaim who they are. I want to give back the support and genuine care that others have given to me.

What/who inspires you?

Basic human goodness. I am always amazed at all the good that people do every day, and the way that these small acts of kindness ripple out to create a better community. We are all in this together!

What do people say your biggest strength is?

My genuine compassion for others; I am a very empathic person and an intent listener.

One thing you’ve learned from working with people?

That there is always something new to learn! Whenever I think I’ve figured someone out, I discover a new layer of who they are. It has taught me never to make assumptions and to know that our imperfections are what make us relatable.

Something you’re proud of (challenge you’ve overcome, etc.)?

I recently started kickboxing! I was always so intimidated to go to a martial arts class and was afraid of looking stupid learning martial arts as an adult. It turns out it has been one of the most fun and empowering experiences I’ve had!

Favorite things to do?

One of my biggest passions in life is horses, and I spend a lot of my weekends doing dressage out in Langley. I also love to scuba dive and cook!

Favorite book and why?

The Body Keeps the Score. I have read this book over and over! I love the way it ties in psychology, neuroscience, and somatic awareness into the study of trauma and the nervous system. Its teachings are transparent and easily applied to everyday life.
